Google Business Profile categories for restaurants, done right.

Your primary category is the biggest Map Pack lever most restaurants get wrong. Here is how to choose it.

Why it matters

Categories are how Google understands you.

When someone searches "halal restaurant near me", Google does not read your mind. It matches the search to business categories. If your primary category is "Restaurant" while your competitor is "Halal restaurant", they win that search before anything else is considered. Reviews, photos, and posts cannot compensate for a wrong primary category.

How to choose

Primary first, secondaries second.

Pick the most specific true category as primary

Google lets you choose one primary category. Make it the most specific one that accurately describes your restaurant: "Pizza restaurant" beats "Restaurant", "Halal restaurant" beats both if halal is your identity. Specificity wins relevance without costing you broader searches.

Add every honest secondary

Secondaries expand the searches you can match: "Caterer" if you cater, "Takeout restaurant" if takeout is a real offering, "Brunch restaurant" if you serve brunch. Only add what is true. Google removes misleading categories, and mismatches erode trust.

Study the winners

Search your target terms and look at the top three Map Pack listings. Their categories are visible on their profiles. If every winner uses a category you lack, that is your answer. This is competitor research you can do in ten minutes.

Mistakes

What to avoid.

Keyword stuffing the business name. Adding "Best Pizza Chicago" to your restaurant name violates policy and risks suspension. Categories are where keywords belong, not the name field.

Choosing ten secondaries. More is not better. Irrelevant categories dilute relevance and can trigger Google to question what the business actually is. Five accurate ones beat twelve hopeful ones.

Setting and forgetting. Google adds new categories regularly, and menus evolve. Review your categories twice a year and after any menu or concept change.

Examples

Category picks by restaurant type.

Halal restaurant: primary "Halal restaurant", secondaries "Middle Eastern restaurant", "Takeout restaurant", "Caterer".

Pizzeria: primary "Pizza restaurant", secondaries "Italian restaurant", "Takeout restaurant", "Delivery restaurant".

Desi restaurant: primary "Pakistani restaurant" or "Indian restaurant" (whichever matches the menu), secondaries "Halal restaurant" if applicable, "Takeout restaurant", "Caterer".

Notice the pattern: one specific primary, a handful of true secondaries, nothing aspirational.

Common questions

Category questions, answered.

Can I change my primary category later?

Yes, anytime, and it takes effect quickly. Changing it is safe as long as the new category is accurate. Expect ranking shifts within days as Google re-evaluates relevance.

How many secondary categories should I add?

As many as are genuinely true, usually three to six. Every one should describe something a customer could verify by visiting.

My cuisine is not listed as a category. What now?

Pick the closest accurate category as primary and use your description, menu, and posts to cover the cuisine in words. Also suggest the missing category to Google through the category feedback option.

Do categories affect which searches trigger my profile?

Directly. Categories are the primary way Google decides which searches your profile is relevant for, which is why getting them right comes before everything else.
